The Fantastic Library of Beasts opens its doors on November 4th, 2025 at the Amatller Art Centre in Barcelona, as an invitation to delve into the fascinating symbolic and visual universe of the Middle Ages.
This new experience offers a journey through time to discover how medieval men and women imagined, feared and revered the creatures that inhabited their books and legends.
Dragons, unicorns, sirens, lions and other extraordinary beasts come to life in an itinerary that blends heritage, digital art and contemporary storytelling.
The exhibition invites visitors to explore how these fantastic beings reflected the medieval understanding of nature, faith and morality, and how these imaginaries have left a profound mark on European culture up to the present day.
Crossing the threshold of this library means entering a space of discovery, where the past converses with present-day technologies to offer a new and revealing perspective on one of the richest and most enigmatic periods of our history, where visitors will also find unique medieval works from the MEV, such as the beam from the baldachin of Sant Martí de Tost, among others.
Starting from November 4th, 2025
Sessions from 10 AM to 8 PM
Duration: 90 minutes
Centre d’Art Amatller
Passeig de Gràcia, 41 – Barcelona
Among the most notable highlights of the experience are:
“Journey into Hell” — a VR360º virtual reality experience that invites visitors to discover impressive hybrid and fantastical beasts from the medieval world, such as the phoenix, the dragon, the harpy and the whale.
“Immersive Bestiary” — a visually stunning immersive film that draws us into the world of medieval bestiaries, books filled with richly illuminated depictions of fantastical creatures, featuring icons such as the peacock, the basilisk, the elephant, the centaur and the mermaid.
“Sketch & Post” — an interactive room where visitors can create their own medieval beast, animate it and see it projected.
The project was born following the success of the temporary exhibition “Beasts” at the MEV, the Museum of Medieval Art — a show that sparked great interest among both the public and critics for its ability to bring the symbolic universe of medieval bestiaries closer to a contemporary audience. Curated by Judit Verdaguer and Marc Sureda, the exhibition was awarded the Catalan Association of Museologists’ prize for Best Exhibition of the Year, as well as the Sàpiens Award for Best Historical Outreach Initiative.
Building on that experience, The Fantastic Library of Beasts expands and transforms that legacy into an immersive, multisensory proposal that invites visitors to relive this imaginary from a new perspective, combining historical rigour with the most innovative creative technologies.
The project is a co-production between Layers of Reality and the MEV, Museum of Medieval Art, and will offer a full experience featuring traditional exhibition spaces, an immersive room, interactive installations and virtual reality experiences.
Layers of Reality is an extended reality content production studio founded in 2017 and a leading reference in the creation of immersive experiences. It manages venues such as IDEAL Barcelona, MAD (Madrid Artes Digitales) and Bombas Gens Centre for Digital Arts in Valencia. Among its most acclaimed productions are Klimt: The Immersive Experience, Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon, Dalí Cybernetic, The Last Days of Pompeii, Tutankhamun: The Immersive Experience, Sorolla: A New Dimension and Jules Verne 200, presented in several countries around the world.
