Saint Mary Magdalene

Gothic

Anonymous

Last quarter of the 14th century

Location icon

Mary Magdalene is traditionally identified as the woman who anointed Jesus' head at Bethany, in the house of Simon the Leper. According to the Gospels, she was also one of the women to whom an angel announced the resurrection of Jesus when they were going to visit the tomb to anoint his body with perfumes. For all these reasons the most characteristic attribute of Mary Magdalene is a jar of perfumes or ointments like the ones held by this image and the image next to it (MEV 166). Another characteristic iconographical trait of Mary Magdalene is long hair, alluding to her life as a penitent. Notice on this image how a fair amount of gilt has been preserved on the hair; this along with the beautiful diadem of flowers she wears on her head, matching the brooch she wears on her breast.
