Saint John the Baptist

Gothic

Anonymous

Around 1400

Location icon

Ivory objects have always been highly appreciated, both for the quality and the exotic nature of the material and for the delicacy with which they are usually carved. Vic Cathedral once possessed two exceptional ivories, now unfortunately lost: a Byzantine tablet that portrayed Christ between Saint John and the Virgin and a Gothic diptych with scenes from the Passion. They were imported pieces. On the other hand, this exquisite figure of Saint John the Baptist holding the 'Agnus Dei' (Lamb of God) presents characteristics typical of the Catalan Gothic style and it is therefore considered to be a singular testimony to ivory carving in this country.
