This image was possibly included in the retrospective art exhibition held in Vic in 1868; in any case, it became part of the Cercle Literari de Vic museum, where Jacint de Macià deposited it in 1883 and from where it passed, six years later, to the founding deposit of the MEV. It is probable, therefore, that it comes from the city of Vic or its surroundings. The provenance of Vic is also consistent with the stylistic analysis of the piece by Josep Bracons, who interpreted it, along with other similar alabaster sculptures (MEV 63 and 10,627), as the product of a workshop derived from the one directed by Bernat Saulet at Sant Joan de les Abadesses, active in the diocesan capital in the mid-14th century and perhaps related to the works on the cloister of Vic Cathedral. In this alabaster image, originally polychrome, Mary is seated on a bench with a richly carved pillow, with a bird in her right hand and the Child Jesus, who carries the book of the Gospels, seated on her left arm and knee. Both the Mother and the Child wear abundantly pleated tunics; Mary also wears a cloak that covers her head and shoulders, gently puffed out by the wind on the sides of her face and fastened on her chest with a rich brooch. The combination of modern stylistic features (face, hair, clothing, folds, brooch, as well as the use of alabaster itself), which reveals a knowledge of Italianate Gothic sculpture, with others more rooted in tradition, such as the seated position of the Virgin, together with slight imperfections in the proportions and the general treatment of the anatomy, also seem to point to a secondary production compared to the finest products of the famous Sant Joan workshop.
