The annual medals show the most important events that have taken place in the papacy over the year: celebrations, holidays, openings of public buildings… On this medal the opening of a new home for the Vatican Pinacoteca is commemorated. The Vatican museums, which the Pinacoteca is part of, are a group of galleries and museums inaugurated in the 18th century by Benedict XV with the Sacred Museum and by Clement XIII with the Profane Museum. Clement XIV continued the Vatican museum enterprise, culminated by Pius VI with the Pio-Clementine Museum. Later, the Gregorian Etruscan Museum and the Gregorian Egyptian Museum, among others, were added. It was in these galleries and rooms where 'Mossèn' Gudiol, who had gone to Rome in 1894, was to learn of the latest scientific contributions to Christian archaeology, and the most modern museographical and museological techniques.
