A blue plate from the 'la corbata' series, with a lady in the centre holding a bottle in one hand and a glass in the other. Her dress indicates to us that she is a lady from a very aristocratic family. The theme on the brim consists of repeated bows that the series is named after: 'la corbata' (the tie), because they reminded the first people to catalogue it of the bows on the cravats that were part of the gentlemen's dress of the time. It is one of the series of which most examples have survived. Production of this series began at the beginning of the 17th century. They are pieces technically perfect, with designs of great force and imagination and very varied motifs. The clothes of the different figures are always painted with all manner of details and they therefore constitute a document of the fashions of the time. They have a certain simplification of the line, due precisely to the selfassurance with which they were painted, making them tend towards simplification. The central motifs are very varied: coats of arms, ladies and gentlemen in different activities, buildings, figures from the religious tradition of both the Old and the New Testament, and they have a certain hieratic appearance within the general clutter that characterises them.
