During the Reapers' War (1640-1652) many significant changes took place in Catalan coinage, which reflected the way the war was going. Coins were minted successively in the names of Philip IV, the Principality of Catalonia, Louis XIII and Louis XIV, while new values were created, different to the Castilian ones. In 1641 Catalonia declared itself independent, a fact that was reflected on the obverse of the coins, which show several variations on the legend PRINCIPATVS CATALONIAE. The needs generated by the war led various towns to open mints, which basically followed the model of the Barcelona mint, putting the name, however, and at times the coat of arms, of the issuing city on the reverse. One of these towns was Vic, which had its coat of arms and the name of the city engraved.
