Polychrome pottery adopted the full range of colours coming from Italy and became part of the needs of wealthy, cultured society in the 17th century. From that moment onwards the divide was very clear between earthenware, the most rudimentary pottery, and this, in which the decoration is the most important element. Even though they may have been destined for functional uses, the polychrome series were conceived with a clear decorative intent. The decorations are adapted perfectly to the support and the themes are deliberately pleasant and always original. The centres were occupied by the basic theme and the brim was decorated with repetitive motifs in the form of a border, which provided the names for several series. On this plate the main theme is a woman spinning in the open air, and the theme on the brim is that of the 'fulla partida' (divided leaf), in two colours, of which several variations are known, with four faces dividing the space into quarters.
